Bruges (brugge in dutch) is one of the most picturesque cities in Belgium, and the capital of the West Flanders region.
With just under 120,000 inhabitants Bruges has been called the “Venice of the north” because of its beautiful canals and bridges.
Bruges originally flourished in the late middle ages and was spared from bombing in both World Wars so its architecture, which often dates back to the 13th to 15th centuries, is remarkably intact.
Today the Old Town is a UNESCO world heritage site, and rightly so, walking around it will truly make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time!
Bruges is an ideal place to visit on a quick weekend trip. From London you can either fly to Brussels with British Airways from Heathrow (45 minutes) or catch the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels (1h45) and then catch the train to Bruges (1.5hrs.)
The Old Town covers a relatively small area – we were able to see everything we wanted on foot in less than a day, though going on a boat tour on the canals is another way to see the sights.
Bruges is also an ideal place to savour some traditional Belgian food like Moules frites, Waffles and Belgian Chocolate.
For the best waffles in town head to Chez Albert just off the market square where you can get waffles to go with Belgian chocolate, cream, cherries or strawberries… they’re delish!
There’s also a beer wall showcasing over 100 Belgian beers and their accompanying glasses in the 2be complex. This is a unique place to try some local beer such as Brugse Zot or Bourgogne de Flandres which are brewed in the city proper.
You can also find some unique gifts or souvenirs at the 2be shop such as beer glasses, chocolates and merchandise related to famous Belgian comics like The Adventures of Tintin and The Smurfs.
Last but not least if you choose to visit Bruges during the festive season there is a cute traditional Christmas Market in the main square. It runs from the 23rd of Nov to the 1st of Jan. Grab yourself some mulled wine and enjoy!
