North America is a continent made up of 3 distinct regions;
Northern America which includes Canada, the United States of America, Bermuda, Saint Pierre et Miquelon (a French territory) and Greenland (part of the Kingdom of Denmark.) Sometimes Mexico is included in this group. This is the most developed part of North America. Some of the biggest draw cards for tourists in Northern America are the big cosmopolitan cities such as San Francisco, New York, New Orleans, Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver. Others are the breathtaking National Parks like the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Banff & Jasper national parks.
Central America includes the seven traditional Central American countries; Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua & Panama, which are all developing countries, and sometimes may include Mexico. The main language spoken throughout Central America is Spanish. Draw cards for tourists include the nature & wildlife as Central America is a hotspot for biodiversity with it’s tropical rainforests, as well as being very volcanically active. This region also features a kaleidoscope of cultures, and there are still ruins to be seen from the Mayan civilisation.
The Caribbean is made up of more than 700 islands, islets, reefs & keys that are organised into 30 territories. The independent states in the Caribbean are Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & The Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago. These are largely all developing countries. There are also many British, French & Dutch overseas territories as well as islands that belong to Colombia, Venezuela and the USA (most notably Puerto Rico.) Culturally the Caribbean region is hugely diverse, but the overarching draw card for tourists is the region’s beautiful beaches.
